1945 — 2026

Karen Blackwell smiling in golden-hour light, wearing a gold silk wrap
Karen as a young cheerleader mid-cheer, one pom-pom raised high, her name stitched on her skirt
Karen laughing in the kitchen, toy horn in hand, kids at her side
Karen arm in arm with a loved one, party plates in hand, both beaming
“Ya know, just a squirrel trying to get a nut.”

Her Story

Youngest of fifteen, center of everything

Karen Fitzgerald was born in Pittsburgh on September 23, 1945 — the youngest of fifteen children, which may explain why a full house always felt like the right amount of house. With George she raised four: Lea, Heather, Mark, and Chip. Pittsburgh, then New Jersey, then Minnesota — where she stayed, and where the party found its permanent address.
